At the beginning of October, the 34th conference of the Austrian Center for Intelligence, Propaganda & Security Studies (ACIPSS) took place at the FH Campus Wien. The event has been organized for several years in cooperation with the Department of Risk and Security Management and the Association of Academic Security Consultants (VASBÖ). Vice-Rector Evelyn Süss-Stepancik and VASBÖ Vice President Sandra Goldberger welcomed around 30 guests, including experts from ministries, institutions, and universities from Germany and Switzerland.
The Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to Austria, Lina Rukštelienė, highlighted her country’s perspective on current foreign and security policy challenges in her opening speech. Gerald Hesztera and Eva-Marina Strauss presented the impressive project by the Ministry of the Interior (BMI) on addressing the history of the police during National Socialism. Graz expert Dieter Bacher (Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Research on the Consequences of War, editor of the *Journal for Intelligence, Propaganda and Security Studies*) reported on ČSSR espionage in Austria during the first half of the Cold War and drew some remarkable parallels to current cases.
Anton Tantner (University of Vienna, Chair of ÖGDI) provided a historical overview of “Numbers as Means of Surveillance and Control” – from the numbering of houses to that of police officers. Finally, Nikolaus Münker, a graduate of the Bachelor’s program in Integrated Security Management, presented his research on economic and industrial espionage. Once again, the conference was moderated by strategy consultant and podcaster Thomas Goiser.
The next ACIPSS conference is expected to take place on October 10, 2025.
