On September 11, 2024, Cordula Simon and Stefan Auer were invited as speakers at the 4th Conference on Corporate Security and Personal Protection hosted by closeprotection.at. In their lecture titled “Digital Disinformation & Manipulation – Challenges and Tools for Greater Manipulation Resilience,” they provided a comprehensive insight into the connections between new communication technologies and the associated media transformation, the psychological effects on information processing, conspiracy thinking, and radicalization within the context of disinformation and “fake news.”
They demonstrated how the rise of social media, alongside the decline of print media and investigative journalism, combined with human biases, the desire for confirmation and group affiliation, and the algorithms driven by our click behavior, creates dangerous synergies. These developments increasingly undermine the foundations of our democracy, our discourse, and our understanding of truth.
