In August 2024, a planned terrorist attack on the concert of American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, the capital of Austria, was uncovered and foiled. The attack, which was supported by the militant jihadist group Islamic State, was aimed at mass murder among concertgoers and passers-by near the stadium. Three young men aged 17, 18 and 19 were arrested. They were involved in the plot, which, according to information from the CIA, which warned the Austrian authorities at an early stage, would have claimed up to 10,000 lives.
Researchers Dr. Florian Hartleb and Dr. Nicolas Stockhammer, experts in the field of terrorism and security policy, have analyzed the case in detail. In particular, they looked at current developments such as the young age of the potential perpetrators and new forms of radicalization in the virtual world. Their conclusion: Islamist terrorism poses a growing threat to security in Europe due to these new characteristics. They warn of the destabilization attempts of political Islam, which can also be observed in countries such as Germany.
