Political scientist and ACIPSS member Florian Hartleb, who spoke in an interview on Deutschlandfunk radio, emphasizes that the danger posed by lone perpetrators has long been underestimated in Germany. In his book “Lone Wolves”, which deals with right-wing extremist lone perpetrators, he criticizes the fact that politicians and authorities have placed too little focus on this form of terrorism.
One example of this is the right-wing terrorist attack at the Olympic shopping center in Munich in 2016, in which the 18-year-old perpetrator killed nine people and seriously injured five others. “This attack was wrongly classified as apolitical,” explains Hartleb in the interview. “My impression was that Germany focused heavily on group-related terrorism, while terror by individual perpetrators was played down.
