On November 26, 2024, ACIPSS together with SICHER LEBEN Graz invited to a highly interesting lecture at the Karl-Franzens-University Graz. Philipp Pflegerl, research associate at the Federal Agency for Sectarian Issues and expert on conspiracy theories, provided in-depth insights into his research and experiences.
The focus was on how conspiracy theories offer simple answers to difficult questions in an increasingly complex world, often triggering dangerous social dynamics. Pflegerl explained how such narratives undermine democratic values and trust in institutions by dividing the world into “good and evil” and integrating anti-Semitic elements. These conspiracy narratives can not only lead to social division, but also serve as a breeding ground for extremist ideologies and radicalization.
The discussion that followed was particularly enriching, with participants asking questions, sharing their thoughts and thinking together about strategies for dealing with conspiracy theories. The evening showed how important it is to address these topics openly and to sensitize society to the dangers of such narratives.
Many thanks to Philipp Pflegerl for his impressive contribution and to all participants who made the evening an exciting and enriching exchange with their questions and contributions.
