Iraq faces the challenge of relying on strong allies such as the USA to counter the threat of a resurgence of ISIS. At the same time, the Iraqi government is striving to maintain a balance in its relations with both the USA and Iran, allowing Iran to support Shiite militias within the country.
In his commentary in the Jerusalem Post, Florian Hartleb analyzes the current situation: Despite the loss of its caliphate, ISIS remains a significant threat. The organization continues to recruit fighters globally, particularly in Western countries, where the phenomenon of “lone wolves” is becoming increasingly common.
Florian Hartleb, a political scientist and member of Acipss, emphasizes that the influence of ISIS extends far beyond the Middle East. He points out that the organization derives its power from acts of terror in Europe and America, as observed recently in Moscow. He notes that paradoxically, the threat from ISIS must now be intensively monitored especially in the West.
