ACIPSS researcher Dr. Florian Hartleb warns in a recent article on t-online.de about a development that is still widely underestimated: the radicalisation of young people is increasingly shifting into the digital sphere. Recruitment, identity formation and escalation take place via platforms, online communities and subcultures – often disguised as seemingly harmless or “edgy” content.
Current investigations also show that very young suspects can become involved in extremist networks much earlier than many adults assume. Hartleb’s central message: prevention does not start in the courtroom, but much earlier – in the everyday digital lives of young people.
Key approaches include strengthening digital resilience, better-equipped schools, more guidance for parents in dealing with platform cultures, and closer cooperation between educational institutions, youth services, platforms and security authorities.
