Following the tragic attack in Villach, ACIPSS Director Paul Schliefsteiner warns in an interview with ORF Styria of the increasing rapid radicalization on the Internet. Social media and their algorithms play a central role in this: once someone comes across extremist material, they are drawn further and further into a radical world of thought by automatic suggestions.

It is particularly alarming that younger and younger people are becoming susceptible to extremist ideologies. It is often less about deeply rooted convictions and more about a search for meaning and a fascination with violence. At the same time, many extremist contents are difficult to prosecute, as they often operate in a gray area of freedom of expression.
