New book: “Democracy: Ideal construct or outdated model?” – Is the successful model of the “global West” failing?

We present the new volume of the IURA HISTORIA research series by ACIPSS staff members Richard Wallenstorfer and Manfred Novak. Renowned scientists, many of whom are well known from the media, as well as experts from the field analyze current and past threats to democracy and attempt to identify countermeasures.

The democracies of the “global West,” including Austria, have been severely shaken by economic crisis, the coronavirus crisis, climate crisis, migration crisis, and war. These problems, which threaten the very existence of many population groups, also have indirect consequences for the people affected, which can have a primary impact on the potential dangers to state governance. These potential threats range from political apathy and hostility toward the state to political and religious extremism.

The content of the volume begins with the tensions between the first democracies in ancient Greece and ultimately focuses on the threat of the destruction of the democratic consensus in Austria.
