In a recent guest commentary on n-tv.de, Dr. Florian Hartleb, political scientist and researcher at ACIPSS, analyzes the controversial report by the German Office for the Protection of the Constitution, which classifies the AfD as “confirmed right-wing extremist.”
Dr. Hartleb warns against a hasty ban on the party, arguing that such a move would be difficult to enforce legally and could be politically counterproductive by casting the AfD as the supposed victim.
He also criticizes the lack of transparency in the report and the use of Facebook posts as evidence, which he considers problematic.
His conclusion: rather than a ban, a clear political and social debate on authoritarian tendencies is crucial in dealing with the AfD phenomenon.
