Following the jihadist terrorist attack in Villach, ACIPSS Director Paul Schliefsteiner analyzed the security policy challenges and options for action for Austria on ORF III Aktuell.
He emphasized the need to monitor online activities in order to identify radicalization at an early stage and take preventive action. However, effective implementation requires sufficient financial and human resources.
As it is difficult for a small country like Austria to effectively monitor content on large international platforms, a European solution is required. Only through increased cooperation at EU level could not only the legal framework be improved, but also technical solutions developed and operational measures implemented in order to efficiently identify and combat extremist content.
